Emblem 18

Information and materials

The cunning printer, obliged to fold so many pages the easier to marble for Volume III of Sterne’s Tristram Shandy, would have sought at random a template of the approximate proportions.

Curious to what he might have used, I searched for items of that size, 117 x 67 mm, available at that time, and discovered a pack of Tarot cards published in 1760 by Nicholas Conver.

I cannot say whether it might have been at random or design that I drew from this pack a card to be the ‘emblem of my work’, except to record the name of the card as Le Bateleur, or sleight-of-hand merchant or artist.
